Get in your lane and RUN!

Dear All,

Thursday’s Bottom Line:

Day #1 of the Disciple-Makers seminar in Kiboko was wonderful! 71 people attended, and by spreading it over two days, Scott was able to go slowly enough that they really “got” it. Scott’s health is great, which is a huge blessing.

Thursday’s Prayer Requests:

1. Two new DM groups to be formed in the Kiboko area from the attendees on Day #2 (Friday).
2. All the married people at this 2-day DM seminar to bring their spouses for the Better Together seminar on Saturday.
3. God’s to clearly lead Scott in dealing with administrative issues as the ministry expands.Thursday’s Details:

Scott was pretty excited about how the first day of the Kiboko DM seminar went. He said, “We had a great meeting today. We had 71 people. One came from Nairobi (3.5 hours away) and set up a camera to video record the whole thing for his private use. We are meeting in another church with no power. We ran everything from a generator.”

These folks were SO attentive!“The people were so fired up for discipleship. I went slow and they definitely caught everything. It was great to be back in my RDM lane.”
My Hero in his lane and running! “They already have 6 DM groups in the greater area and are embracing the idea of taking the DM movement to other communities within and outside their county.” When people catch a God-created vision, embrace it, and run with it to impact others, great things happen!

Your PRAYERS are helping facilitate this growth, both within these individuals and branching out to other areas. Thank you for praying for God’s word and his power to prevail during – and long after – these three days of ministry in Kiboko!

Blessings,
Patty

Good news: Powerful testimonies inside

Dear All,

Wednesday’s Bottom Line:

Scott finished his BT seminar in Arusha, Tanzania on Tuesday (see a moving testimony below), then on Wednesday traveled nearly nine hours to Kiboko, Kenya, where he is now (Wednesday night MO time) leading a 2-day Disciple-Makers seminar on Thursday and Friday, followed by a Better Together marriage seminar for ministry couples on Saturday.

Wednesday’s Prayer Requests:

1. The Holy Spirit to clearly lead and minister to everyone involved in the 3-day seminar in Kiboko.
2. God to make a way for Pastor Michael and other TTC team members to develop ongoing relationships with the hotel owner in Arusha; TTC to provide Swahili PTM books for his ministry.
3. Good health for Scott and a good balance of responsibility among the various TTC team members.Wednesday’s Details:

Scott said, “Today I traveled 6 hours from Arusha to Kitegala…
L to R: Scott, Pastor Michael, Joyce and Hillary
… then got out of the bus to meet James. [He and I] got into a car driven by a minister of the Kenyan Dept of the Interior and traveled 2.5 hours to Kiboko.” That’s a LOT of travel, but it’s nothing compared to what Pastor Michael is doing every week!

Scott said, “I asked Pastor Michael how long he will be making the weekly trip to Babati. He said something akin to, ‘as long as it takes’ (amazing!).

“Then I asked, ‘Why are you investing two days out of seven each week for these few pastors?’

“He said, ‘I really enjoy it. The people have such a great hunger. We all need to find what God has called us to do and then do it. I feel honored to be chosen by God.’

“He usually leaves around 3 PM Sunday and gets home around midnight on Monday night, having spent 20 of those 33 hours sitting in a vehicle of some kind.

“Here’s another great testimony from Arusha. Pastor Uhwello was so moved by my 2nd wife story. He publicly repented to his wife about how he found he has allowed ministry to supplant his wife’s place in his heart. You can see her reaction. He said he feels this seminar is going to bring a radical transformation in his marriage.”

Pastor Uhwello holding his wife’s hand while repenting“Oh, and one more cool story about Arusha…

“After we had terrible service at the hotel, the owner of the hotel found out from the manager that we were missionaries. He searched out Hillary, apologized, and then invited him to his executive office and requested that Hillary pray for him. Then the owner got down on his knees and Hillary prayed for him!

“He owns two hotels in Arusha and also does prison ministry. Pray that we can continue relationship with him and provide him with PTM books (in Swahili) for his ministry.”

And then Scott said, “We had a planning session for the 3 days of meetings in Kiboko. Everything is in order and we are expecting to launch two new DM groups from the RDM seminar.” Let me tell you how significant this is:

Scott asked me if I remembered a story he’d told me months ago, about how James had gone to certain place to meet with three groups of pastors about getting a Disciple-Makers group started there. And how it did not look promising because these pastors were members of three different ministerial groups that for whatever [petty?] reasons had not been willing to work together for three years. But when James explained from the scriptures the importance of raising disciple-makers, they came together and repented for their divisive attitudes. Wow!

Scott said, “That story was about Kiboko! These are the pastors in Kiboko, and they are now working together to host this 3-day seminar!”

As the saying goes, “If that doesn’t light your fire, your wood’s wet!”  = )

Be encouraged, and would you please pray for our team again today? Thank you!

Blessings,
Patty

Lots of great news and pictures!

Dear All,

Tuesday’s Bottom Line:

Hillary is feeling better, Scott is fine, everything about Babati was amazing: the travel to get there, the crowd waiting for them, the church facility, the leaders, the results, and what they saw on the way “home.” WHAT a day it was!

Tuesday’s Prayer Requests:

1. The pastoral couples who came to the Babati BT seminar to DO what they learned and keep doing it.
2. God to greatly bless the TTC partners whose faithful financial giving has made today’s seminar possible.
3.  Another wonderful BT seminar in Arusha on Tuesday.Tuesday’s Details:

I really am going to let Scott tell you all the great news about today in his own words, and you will be pumped! But first, I do want to try to explain some things so you will realize what a big deal today was.

Scott has been going to Kenya and training pastors to become disciple-makers for probably more than five years. His core team, those who lead the TTC ministry in Kenya, are Hellen, Hillary, and James. (James is the one who was consecrated as a bishop on Saturday.)

Each of those three has led multiple 10-month-long weekly DM groups in various counties of Kenya, so each of them now has numerous disciples who are now raising disciple-makers who are raising disciple-makers, etc. But in recent years, those three have felt a strong calling to begin holding DM seminars and starting DM groups to raise disciple-makers in neighboring nations, as well as in Kenya.

Hillary has a heart for Tanzania. For the past several months, one of his disciples, Pastor Michael, has been making the same ten-hour, one-way trip that Scott, Hillary, and Joyce just made, and he does it every week to lead a DM group in Tanzania. Can you imagine?!? You’ve got to REALLY care about something or somebody to invest that kind of time and energy. Scott will explain details about that below.

See, it used to be that Scott would go to Kenya to lead DM seminars. Then the pastors who attended would join a DM group. As they learned and were trained, they started their own DM groups. Then Scott would go back later, and all those pastors who had been experiencing and applying this discipleship process would bring their wives and attend a BT marriage seminar for ministers.

That is how it USED to be, but now the Three and their disciples and their disciples are leading DM seminars and overseeing DM groups. They are making all the connections and arranging all the details, and on this trip, Scott is coming in and leading many BT seminars and a few DM seminars.

OK. I know that was one massively long introduction. But if you’re willing to keep reading, the really good stuff is yet to come. = )At 5:30 Monday morning local time, Scott said, “Hillary is eating and has not had any digestive issues since 8 pm. He even ate last night and had milk tea. We prayed for him and he seems to be doing well. Just a bit weak.” Praise God.

“Bishop Peter, from Arusha, was our driver. He also is the one who connected us with the people in Babati.” In this picture Peter is to the right of Scott, two men back. Leaders from the Babati Better Together seminar“We had 102 attendees out in the village for the meeting today. Side note – it is a LONG way to Babati! Three hours on the road and about 30 minutes on terrible dirt roads. We arrived after 10 AM and everyone was there sitting and waiting for us, all 100+ of them. Whereas in the town, people came late and left right after lunch, in the village, they all stayed until the end.”

Bishop Peter interpreting for Scott“They used a generator for power, since there is no electricity in the church.”

Church with dirt floor and literally no walls
Please look again at this picture of the leaders, and note Pastor Michael. His head appears to be right under Scott’s chin. And look at that smile!
Now here’s what Scott said about Michael. [Note from Patty about Pastor Michael: He’s a pastor, you know. Most pastors are fairly busy on Sunday mornings…] “Every week Pastor Michael travels on Sunday 6 hours to Arusha, stays overnight there, catches a bus at 5:30 AM for the three-hour trip to Babati, then rides a “tuk-tuk” for 30 rugged minutes from Babati out into the village.” Tuk-tuks are semi-enclosed motorized tricycles, economy taxis, so to speak.

Tuk-tuks in Tanzania
(Photo credit: https://tortugaphoto.smugmug.com/Africa/Our-Own-Private-Tanzania/i-ntZqpn6)”Michael then repeats all that travel on his way back home. He has told me multiple times he is ‘honored to be able to serve this way.’ The host pastor at this church in Babati has requested that we start a DM group at his church. Pastor Michael will meet with those interested next Monday to discuss starting the new group on Monday after his other group finishes. Yay!

“And Bishop Peter [who is based in Arusha and drove them from Arusha to the village outside Babati today and then interpreted for Scott] told Hillary tonight as he left that he has decided to cancel his plans he had for tomorrow, because he must bring his wife and the two of them sit and listen to the seminar tomorrow. AMAZING!

“Hillary received a great testimony from one of the husbands today. He said he had NEVER said he was sorry to his wife before, but today was the first time. His wife was there beside him smiling.”

I hope you can see that only a week into this trip, YOUR prayers are being heard by God and he is answering!!! Please don’t stop now.

Finally (well, almost finally) Scott said, “Look what we saw on the side of the road on our way home today!”

Can you count the zebras? I keep getting different numbers.  = )And finally – for real, I promise – Scott said, “Please thank all of our financial partners who enable us to send out missionaries like this to equip these pastors to fulfill the great commission and make disciples of all nations.”
THANK YOU!Blessings

Great praise report / Urgent prayer request

Dear All,

Sunday’s Bottom Line:

Hillary and Scott are both in Tanzania! Hillary is not feeling well. Travel plans are a bit different than I had thought.

Sunday’s Prayer Requests:

1. Healing for Hillary (vomiting, diarrhea) and Scott to stay healthy.
2. Grace for them both for much driving and a full BT seminar in Babati on Monday.
3. The pastoral couples at the Better Together seminar to be profoundly impacted and ministered to.Sunday’s Details:

Scott’s texts to me Sunday morning right before church went like this.

9:22 AM (MO time) – “Approaching the Tanzanian border. Thanks for your prayers for a smooth crossing.”

9:55 AM – “See what $50 and God’s favor can do!”Scott’s Tanzanian visa!
And a new vaccination booklet that is not falling apartSo, rejoice with us; God answered our prayers, and Scott and Hillary are now in Tanzania!

20 minutes later Scott said, “After exchanging money to Tanzanian shillings (TZS), Hillary tells me I am a multimillionaire! 1.72 M.”  = )I had thought they were driving on to Babati Sunday night, but here are the current facts as of 9:00 PM Sunday night (TZ time) “Tonight we will stay in Arusha. Then, tomorrow morning at 6 AM, the host pastor will pick us up and drive us 3 hours [farther south] to Babati where I will teach a full BT seminar. [That night after the seminar] we will drive 3 hours back to Arusha. On Tuesday, we will hold another BT seminar in Arusha town, then stay the night in Arusha again before heading back to Kenya.”That all sounded good, but this did not: “Prayer request: Hillary started feeling bad around the border. We had to pull over so he could vomit. Now he also has diarrhea. We are hoping it is food-related rather than viral.” Although they are traveling together and have been eating the same foods, we are asking God to quickly heal Hillary AND totally protect Scott from whatever it was.

Thank you for praying for them both!

Blessings,
Patty

Time Critical Prayer

Dear All,

Saturday’s Bottom Line:

Scott’s led his 2nd Better Together marriage seminar in Kagio on Friday, and on Saturday he attended a significant ceremony installing Pastor James (one our TTC Kenya national leaders) as a bishop in his denomination. Sunday will be a packed day with ministry and international travel. Please see prayer request #1 below.

Saturday’s Prayer Requests:

1. God to give Scott favor with Tanzania’s border officials to allow him into the country without having physical (printed) proof of his yellow fever vaccination.
2. Grace for many hours of car travel Sunday afternoon and evening after preaching Sunday morning.
3. Scott’s Monday Better Together (BT) marriage seminar in Babati, Tanzania to be well-attended and life-changing; couples to come with open hearts, regardless of the condition of their marriages.Saturday’s Details:

Scott was one of 13(!!!) guest speakers at the consecration service for Pastor James on Saturday. It started at 10:00 AM and ended sometime after 4:00 PM! There were about 500 people present, and in preparation for the ceremony, they had torn out a wall of the church to accommodate everyone. This was a BIG deal! Scott was honored to be there for his special friend, but James, who is not big on titles and such, later apologized to Scott for “all that pomp and circumstance.”  = )Bishop James, giving his acceptance addressScott will preach at Pastor Hillary’s church in Nairobi on Sunday morning, and after lunch they will begin their trek to Babati (“bah-BAH-tee”), Tanzania. It’s about a two-hour drive to the border, and that is where Scott has a very specific prayer request, which I will now try to explain.

Scott left the U.S. without his proof of yellow fever vaccination. He used to carry it on all mission trips, but some years ago, the policy was changed so that now, if you enter a country from another country where yellow fever is not likely to occur (like the U.S.), you don’t have to carry physical, printed proof of vaccination. So, since Scott flies to various countries from the U.S., he no longer needs to show immigration officials his yellow fever vaccination card. It’s the size of a credit card, but it has about four layers that fold up like an accordion.

Anyway, at about 7:00 AM Sunday MO time, he will be crossing into Tanzania from Kenya, a country where yellow fever can occur, so he texted me asking for help. I found his proof of yellow fever vaccination exactly where he said it was. It’s yellow, seriously dog-eared, and the layers are falling apart. I sent him pictures of it. Please PRAY that the officials at the border of Tanzania will accept those pictures as proof. Thank you so much!

Once across the border, a host pastor will pick them up and drive them some 4+ hours through Arusha (“ah-ROO-shuh”) and on to Babati where Scott will lead a one-day BT seminar on Monday. He will lead a second BT seminar on Tuesday in Arusha.

All told, Sunday may be a very full and very long day for My Hero. I really appreciate your prayers for him now.

Blessings, and for those of you in the U.S., Happy Labor Day!
Patty
